"As a member of the United States Pony Clubs, I stand for the best in sportsmanship as well as in horsemanship. I shall compete for the enjoyment of the game well played and take winning or losing in stride, remembering that without good manners and good temper, sport loses its cause for being. I shall endeavor to maintain the best tradition of the ancient and noble skill of horsemanship, always treating my horse with consideration due a partner."  Pony Club Pledge

Brandywine Hounds Pony Club, located in Southern Chester County, PA.

We ride out of Doe Run Valley Farm, we are very thankful to

Brandywine Hounds Pony Club (BHPC) is a non-profit organization that teaches horsemanship to young people through the age of 25. Its ideal is a simple one - a happy, comfortable child on a happy, comfortable horse.

Though the ideal is simple, members of Pony Club learn far more than how to ride a horse. They also develop responsibility, leadership, cooperation and self-confidence. Established in 1957, BHPC has been an affiliated member of the United States Pony Club (USPC) since 1959. We are located in South Eastern Pennsylvania with members coming from Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.

Pony Club is the leading junior equestrian organization in the world, represented in 30 countries. There are over 600 clubs in the United States with nearly 13,000 members. Pony Club provides instruction and activities essential to the development and nurturing of the child's attraction to, fascination with, and affection for horses. Yet at the same time, emphasizing responsible use and care of horses at all times and in all phases of horsemanship. Throughout Pony Club the 3 R's of Riding, Reading and Responsibility strengthen not only horsemanship but everyday virtues as well.

Through the USPC formal instructional program, members learn about horses and their care through hands-on activities. USPC graduates have gone on to become highly successful instructors, trainers and competitors. Over 30 have been members of the U.S. Olympic teams, and many more are associated with national and world team competitions. Pony Club alumnus, David O'Connor, gold medal winner in the 2000 games at Sydney, Australia, attributes much of his success to his beginnings in Pony Club. However, it is not just professional horsemen and horsewomen that benefit from Pony Club. That's because the personal traits cultivated in Pony Club are an important foundation for success in all areas of life: self-esteem, teamwork, study skills, good manners, personal responsibility and service to others.

While instruction is emphasized over competition, members do compete in regional and national rallies. Members rely solely on themselves and their teammates to stay on schedule, carry out all duties and meet all requirements. Older members act as advisors for younger ones. Young members experience the excitement of testing what they have learned. Everyone enjoys the satisfaction of working together as a team.

Young people involved in Pony Club benefit tremendously by participating in a program which fosters growth in horsemanship, offers the opportunity to make new friends while having lots of fun, and which contributes in many, many ways to significant personal development!
